Is Sugar Causing Your Wrinkles?

According to a recent article in Prevention Magazine, years of eating too much sugar may be making your skin dull and wrinkled.

How can sugar cause wrinkles? A process called glycation occurs in your body, whereby the sugar attaches to proteins and forms molecules called advanced glycation end products (AGEs). AGEs are harmful because they damage other proteins, especially collagen and elastin. When damaged collagen becomes dry and brittle, which leads to sagging skin. Furthermore, glycation changes type III collagen, the most durable form of collagen in your body, into the less stable type I, which is more delicate. The result is less resilient skin and more wrinkles.

Help Reverse Sugar Damaged Skin

Fortunately, you can help repair your sugar damaged skin by building new collagen. Products containing retinol can assist with this process. If you buy an over-the-counter product, for best results look for one with at least 0.1% of retinol. You can also get stronger, prescription-only retinoids, but they can cause significant drying and irritation. You can refer to my last newsletter, where I covered retinoid products in depth.
