How to Apply Skin Care Products Properly for the Most Effectiveness

Maybe cleanse-tone-moisturize is a no-brainer, but with the proliferation of anti aging serums and other special skin care products, what is the proper order of application? It does make a difference. Using toners, moisturizers, serums, sunscreens and special treatments like retinol and alpha hydroxys in the right order can enhance effectiveness. Here is a guideline:

1. Cleanser

Cleanse your face and rinse well to remove makeup, debris and bacteria. Use a gentle, water-soluble cleanser so it won't irritate or dry your skin. The water should be warm, not hot.

2. Toner

Next apply a toner to remove the last of the cleanser and dirt and restore your skin to its natural pH.

3. Serum or special treatment

Now is the time to apply your serum or skin treatment, such as Vitamin C Serum, Retinol product, hyaluronic acid, exfoliant, etc. Why? Because heavier formulas like moisturizers act as a barrier and may prevent lighter formulas like serums from penetrating into your skin.

4. Moisturizer

Apply your favorite moisturizer next. Choose a moisturizer loaded with antioxidants to help arm your skin against free radical damage. For daytime you may like a moisturizer that already contains sunscreen. Wait about 3 minutes for your moisturizer to absorb before applying your makeup. That will help your makeup look fresher longer.

5. Sunscreen

If your moisturizer doesn't contain sunscreen, then be sure to apply a broad spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen with at least an SPF of 30. For more info on choosing sunscreens click here.

Note: When applying skin creams, serums or lotions, use gentle upward strokes. Try not to pull, drag or stretch the skin.
