Ferulic acid and vitamins C and E may protect against skin cancer

A December 16, 2005 article in NewsRx.com says that, topical use of topical ferulic acid and vitamins C and E may offer protection against skin cancer.

"According to a study from the United States, "Ferulic acid is a potent ubiquitous plant antioxidant. Its incorporation into a topical solution of 15% L-ascorbic acid and 1% alpha-tocopherol improved chemical stability of the vitamins (C + E) and doubled photoprotection to solar-simulated irradiation of skin from 4-fold to approximately 8-fold as measured by both erythema and sunburn cell formation."

"Inhibition of apoptosis was associated with reduced induction of caspase-3 and caspase-7. This antioxidant formulation efficiently reduced thymine dimer formation," explained F.H. Lin and colleagues, Duke University."

Studies are showing that idebenone protects skin from free-radical damage such as pollution, over exposure to the sun, chemicals, etc. It improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, smoothes skin texture and reduces inflammation. Studies have compared idebenone with other anti-oxidants and idebenone is out-performing the others.

Free radical damage is what causes wrinkles and other physical signs of skin damage. According to Dr. Andrew Scheman, MD, an associate professor of clinical dermatology at Northwestern University Medical Center, as quoted in Prevention Magazine: "smaller-than-ever molecules make idebenone an agile, streamlined version of its chemical cousin, CoQ10. They can slip readily into dermal cells in the deepest layer of the skin, where they neutralize destructive free radicals."

People who use it find that it reduces dark blotches on their skin and is super at minimizing the size of pores without irritating skin. Skin irritation was a big concern when idebenone products first came on the market, because the first product was 1% concentration and was an ugly bright yellow color.
